As part of our Blue Star project we have a vote every year to teach the children about democracy, representation and the way voting works. This year the children pretended to vote in the Presidential Election. Everything was done exactly as it would be in reality. Canvassing took place before the election, a moratorium was imposed the day before the vote, the ballot box arrived with a garda escort, the returning officer supervised the ballot and voting took place by secret ballot.
The children really enjoyed the experience and Michael D Higgins was returned by them to be President of Ireland for a second term, just as in the real election. Thank you to Ms Mounsey for organising the election, Mrs Cahill for facilitating it and Ms R Carey for helping out on the day. There are more photos on our Instagram.
