The Sacred Heart Primary School, Roscrea, is a Literacy Lift Off school. We are delighted to have a highly trained group of specialist resource teachers and class based teachers who have been specifically trained to deliver this initiative. Our model of support for our pupils involves rigorous and targeted testing prior to starting a six to eight week term of teaching. We then take a team approach to the teaching of reading and writing. The knowledge gained from our testing informs our teaching in five zones. These are, "New Book", "Familiar Book", "Word Work", "Writing" and "Oral Language". This approach is highly intensive and has a proven success record within our school. . Children and staff work exceptionally hard during these weeks. After the intervention we test again to measure the success of the programme. As a follow on we maintain our gains by putting a system of guided reading in place in the class in question. Children continue to read at their improved level through a series of readers which are graded to suit individual needs. The expertise of the teachers coupled with the enthusiasm of the children make Literacy Lift Off a very worthwhile experience for all.
