The Sacred Heart Primary school has completed its international Comenius project. This project has given the students at the school a huge opportunity to develop their knowledge of Global Citizenship in an interactive, collaborative and up to date way. Participating in Comenius enabled the children to enhance their communication skills and strengthen their links with children in other European schools.
Our school is currently linked to St. Josephs Primary School in Aberdeen, Sagarda Corazon in Madrid, St. Juliens Junior School in Malta and Mount St. Catherines School in Armagh. These are also Sacred Heart Schools with whom we share a common ethos. They were fellow participants in our Comenius project.
The activities the children engaged in were both purposeful and enjoyable. They established pen pals, exchanged cards for special occasions and E-
These activities facilitated a strengthening of community links and developed the children’s awareness of their ability to contribute effectively to society.
The activities implemented were carefully devised and planned with the Goals of Sacred Heart Education in mind as ethos of the Sacred Heart Schools are shared. This fundamental link is unique in aspiration and practicality.
The parents whose children attend the school played an essential part in encouraging participation and ensuring progress. Parental Involvement is a key feature of our school and the project. Parents are encouraged to improve their own communication and language skills, whether that means improving English language skills for newcomer parents or improving ICT skills for everyone. Parents sharing their time and talent with the children help to develop the community spirit within the school. This has always been hugely encouraged at the Sacred Heart Primary School.
Regular communication between all of the partner schools was an important factor in ensuring the success of the Comenius project. As a result of this the school purchased ICT equipment to facilitate further opportunities for the children to engage in E-
The links between schools which were strengthened during this project continue to grow as each year the schools communicate and share their practice of promoting their ethos. More schools seek to join this partnership each year and we look forward to forging new friendships as our partnership grows. The Comenius project is now in a new phase and has been renamed Erasmus. We hope to participate in the Erasmus project in the future.
