Today, amongst the discussions about the Global Goals was alot of learning about Goal #5, Gender Equality. Who would have thought that we would still be discussing this old nugget in 2017? First and Second Class had some very interesting statistics learned by the end of the day. Amongst them
1. There are 35 women in the Dáil.
2. That is 40% more women than in 2011.
3. That means that 22.3% of seats are filled by women, this is below the EU average.
4. The Tánaiste, Francis Fitzgerald is the woman who holds the highest rank.
Here at the Sacred Heart all members of our school community are treated equally, with dignity and respect. This is not the case worldwide. We are lucky to have gender equality in Ireland, maybe someday one of our pupils will represent us in the Dáil, girl or boy. Even if we are not budding politicians learning about inequalities helps us to realise how lucky we are and helps us decide what we would like to do to advance the cause of people who are not treated equally. Even if this is not the global goal that you would choose to advance, remember, there are sixteen others!
